Coast Kids: Discover Hidden Gems

Updated: Jun 4

When Kim Quillin founded Coast Kids in 2003, the program was designed to connect families with the wonderful natural places on coastal Delmarva. Year-round monthly Coast Kids events for the whole family have always been the backbone of the program.

Since its inception we’ve organized over 250 fun, unique, experiences such as bird banding with scientists from Salisbury University, paddling the beautiful Eastern Shore rivers and bays, and building nesting boxes for native bees to take home and observe as well as helping our local pollinators. It’s a great way to spend time together outdoors and to discover places most people might never visit. The best part is, while having fun you get to learn interesting facts about our local fauna, flora, and geography!

Every month brings unique experiential learning. Check out some of these amazing highlights from the program.

  • Paddling on Marshall Creek where grass shrimp were jumping in our boats.

  • Catching Bay critters in the Sinepuxent Bay with a seine net, including Pipefish, a close relative to seahorses.

  • Camping at Hazel Outdoor Discovery Center where kids fished, hiked, built an awesome wilderness survival fort, and produced ginormous bubbles using string bubble makers.

  • Observing dozens of horseshoe crabs ready to lay their eggs, including two crabs that had been tagged by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

  • An unforgettable mishap of a turkey vulture throwing up inside the brand-new Paul S. Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center during a Scales and Tales program.
